    • Dolly's Cover is Exceptional

I'm not a fan of tribute albums, especially ones where, for some reason, we're putting a country spin on songs from another genre. That said, Dolly's "Southern Accents" makes the case for why this album should exist in the first place. It's beautfully sung, and the video is very touching. She's as top-notch as it gets. And I kinda dig Rhiannon Giddens' unexpected cover of "Don't Come Around Here No More." All I can say for the rest is that, well, at least it doesn't include a cover from Sheryl Crow or Brandi Carlile who have a way of showing up on EVERY tribute album for some reason.

I was visiting Nashville when Tom Petty died. Almost every band performing on Broadway was playing tribute to Petty. It was magical to hear Petty tunes wafting out the doors and windows of the bars played by local up and coming bands. So I had high hopes for this recording. I appreciated the reimagining of songs -- especially Rhiannon Giddens take on Don't Come Around Here No More -- more so than "star power" straight covers.

Lady Antebellum huge standout in an ok package.. Pettyʼs Heartbreakers made his music (especiałły Campbell and Lynch). A bit on the twangy side at times..(stop TRYING so hard Thomas Rhett)

You can't duplicate Tom Petty and the HeartBreakers songs in a country style. Doesn't matter if they are a southern band from Florida. It's Rock, not country. Does not work for me.

I have to say that I do like some of the covers of Petty's songs on this album but my lord I didn't think anyone could screw up "I need to know" and "Don't come around here no more" but D@MN was I wrong!

The problem with this record is the problem with much of modern country, and that's that there's absolutely no imagination. No one is reinventing these songs (except for Riannon Giddens interesting take on "Don't Come Around Here No More"). It's like being in a bar in Tulsa or Little Rock, and hearing your basic covers band sing Tom Petty. You enjoy it, sure -- they're Tom Petty songs. But aside from the patina of twangy accents layered over the same basic arrangments played and recorded far better by the Heartbreakers, there is absolutely nothing new or even particularly country brought to the party. So, yeah. Meh.

What an unnecessary release. A few minutes into this album all I wanted to do was throw on some TP and the HB. I like some of these artists...but I don't want to hear anyone cover Tom Petty.

Some great Petty songs here, mostly done well. A few are a bit too twangy but that's OK I guess.Dolly is great as are Steve Earle, Luke, Lady A, and some others. Most understand his rock & roll attitude. However, the artist who makes it all worthwhile is Chris Stapleton. The man can rock like nobody and captures Tom's essence completely. He can do just about anything and does it with a flair that only he can bring to a song.
