    • first jazz album I’ve ever truly loved

I was raised on classic rock in the 70s, and I have come to love all sorts of music: opera, funk, R&B, country, all sorts of alt stuff. Lana Del Rey. Most of my limited brain space is filled with songs, songs, songs. My 160GB iPod is nearly full. Jazz is the only music genre I can’t connect with (except jazz-rock like Mahavishnu Orchestra and Zappa). Every year I try something and am bored to tears. Until I heard this album. Serendipity and BC are particular standouts. Great rhythms, excellent harmonies, and every song on the record sounds like a group of musicians playing together, not individual musicians taking turns jamming. Two other outstanding pieces (on Youtube) are Under The Sun (in which Tal W sings with a warm, rich voice) and a live performance with Jeff Beck.

People are writing about "chops" and Tal's "look-at-me" thing but being a musician for almost 40 years, I started with JAZZ and went on to Rock, R & B, and REAL Country for a lot of years. The people that I associated with in the JAZZ genre were ALL "chops" oriented fron Dave Brubeck to Diana Krall. That's what JAZZ music is all about...everybody getting in their "licks" on their particular instrument and showing you what they have learned over the years. That's why JAZZ pieces are sometimes rather lengthy. Tal was talked into switching from guitar to bass because her friends told her that she payed like a JAZZ musician...and that's what she is...and she's one of the best I've ever heard. This is JAZZ music not Rock or R & B and "chops" are expected. If you dn't like JAZZ...don't comment. because you evidently don't know very much about music. My training in JAZZ helps me out a lot when I have to do harmonica or keyboard solo on stage and I'm glad that's where I started.

I met Tal Wilkenfeld in the 55 Bar in Manhattan when she used to live there. We were seeing the Mike Stern trio with the great Anthony Jackson on bass. After talking awhile, she told me she played bass, had just finished music school, and had a solo CD project in the can! I said I would look for it on the internet. All I can say is WOW!!! This is one of the best debut CDs I've heard in years! Mature and thoughtful compositions and awesome playing. The trajectory of her career went straight up after that meeting with her touring with Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock and others. Completely deserved. "Truth Be Told" is an awesome composition. I am a fan for life!

Saw the Beck/Ronnie Scott show for the umpteenth time. Who is that girl child holding down the bottom end? Some excellent solos. Obviously not intimidated by the company, she fits right in... With Jeff Beck!!!! Aussie bass prodigy. Has solo album. Have to get it! Good album...you can hear influences of Jaco (of course), Stanley, maybe Tony Levin, but mostly her own groove. Can't blame her for sticking with Beck, Corea, Ritenour et al, master class after all, but looking forward to more solo work. Go Tal!!!

What an amazing bass player. You have to be great to play with Beck, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Eric Clapton. The emotion on her face as she is playing live tells it all. This girl has a career in the music business for life. She is landing great gigs at such as young age. Truly amazing. Watch out Geddy Lee!!!!
