This is, in most ways a wasted episode. This entire period introduces one and a half men: Marius with a nod to Sulla.
Additionally, it mentions how the emergencies which allowed Marius to 'fix' the Republic also set itself up for the permanent rule of the later dictators.
Here is the flaw in Dan's style for most of these podcasts: he will read you a quote IN ENGLISH of some historian...and then he will take twice that time to reexplain THE EXACT SAME THING THE QUOTE JUST SAID.
Dan thinks you are stupid. So these podcasts, while quite good, and more detailed than 'The History of Rome', are overly fluffy. It is just his style but it grates at times. And I really don't need the oratorical flourishes in the quotes, but okay.
