Few things in the world of music -- short of a piece of diamond scraped across a piece of slate amplified through a stadium sound-system in the rain when you've bought World Series tickets and your team ends up sucking -- are as annoying as the original version of this song. Endless. Endless. Endless, and--songwriting talent notwithstanding--who the heck would want to actually listen to Don McLean? I am firmly convinced--as I was 30 years ago when I was young and someone gave me the original version of this song on a 45--that it was released on 45 not because it was the popular format of the time, but because some secret government agency realized that listening to eight minutes and thirty-four seconds of Don McLean, uninterrupted, would result in people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck being taken seriously. Alas, someone must have used a cassette recorder and mix-taped it to the masses, failing to realize that the whole POINT of having to flip the 45 was so you could take a break, get blind drunk, and then gradually ease yourself back in for the lousy B-side. Thank you Madonna... a very enjoyable song at less than 50% of the original's length, and your voice is still amazing.

This cover is not bad. She greatly shortens the original song, but it's still a good cover of such a classic song!
