Transitioning away from disco, but before they fully embraced the 80’s pop sound that brought hits like “You Win Again and “One”. Living Eyes is an often overlooked album. It’s hard to categorize this album. You get a sense that there was a lot of experimentation with this one. Not every song hits the mark for me, which is why it’s 4 stars and not 5. “He’s a Liar” is definitely outside Bee Gees typical sound as it comes off as an attempt at hard rock. “Nothing Could Be Good” gives me visions of a smoky lounge, early Billy Joel-ish type song. “Cryin’ Every Day” is sort of a early glimpse at the type of music Robin would be doing in his solo albums in the several years to follow. The rest of the songs are truly fantastic. Living Eyes, Paradise, Soldiers & Be Who You Are, are mellow, full-bodied, and over produced Bee Gees goodness. “Don’t Fall In Love With Me” and “I Still Love You” have Robin at the lead. These songs are perfect Robin songs. The man with the crying voice should sing the slightly melancholy songs. Then there’s “Wildflower” sang by Maurice. All are typical catchy Bee Gees melodies, that have a way of putting a seed in your ear, stuck in your head, you’ll find yourself singing these songs. Great album highly recommend.
