JB chased the "Legal Tender" pretty hard on this bummer and subsequent downers. This is his last big LP as he depressed all listeners with this hopeless anthem. Hand ringing, sad sap fluff. Nice T Shirt on the cover, good choice. Penny's, Target, Mom made it? White never goes out of style. His last big success probably because others had to ignore his depressing advice and get a job and suffer for the "Legal Tender". Oh, wait, there was no work cause his boy, Jimmy Carter was the president. What a hypocrite. Probably having tea with Geffen as we speak. bob, denver, co

There are those who cling to the best of and those who seek gems amongst the lesser known. This is one of those gems that you must fully own an listen to in album format to understand what the author was trying to communicate . Ah album format where have you gone/? Great flow and feel the mid 70's sans disco in this one.
    • a great follow up to "Late for the Sky"

This is a strong effort after the masterful "Late for the Sky" which finds Jackson now pondering world issues which would carry through to his later work. What's missing is the dark chamber of relationships he found so easily on "Late for the Sky". "Linda Paloma" is the weak link here and the pop sound Jackson prominently shows on "Hold Out" and "Lawyers in Love" can be heard on "The Pretender", an oddly optimistic track about relationships. Buy this and "Late for the Sky" and you're set. If you need more download "Saturate before Using".

It's all good. Back in the days of record albums, Songs 5 through 8 made up one of the best album sides of all time! However, the first four are pretty damn good too. Buy it all. #2 is one of the best songs ever written.
    • An album that has aged well

One of Jackson Brown's most solid albums, somewhat overshadowed by his live Running onEmpty album released the next year. In particular, the opening contemplative track, The Fuse is one of his more underrated songs. A very complex song featuring the amazing lap steel work of David Lindley. The following songs are all solid and the Album concludes with the anthem-like Pretender track, which is a commentary on modernity.
    • Inconsistant but brilliant

First of all, "The Pretender" is one of Browne's most well known tunes, and for good reason. It is AMAZING. Constantly twisting and turning, few songs about love are as humorous, sarcastic, vulnerable, and unsettlingly familiar at the same time. The rest of the album is more a mixed bag. "The Fuse", "Your Bright Baby Blues", "Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate" are great tracks that would be great on any of his albums. But "Linda Paloma" and "Here Come Those Tears Again" are mostly unsuccessful forays into straight up pop. But I still because the rest of the album is still really good, and 4-5 songs are excellent.
    • THIS is essential JB circa 76

Whether fleeting love (Linda Paloma) or searching to understand a suicide (Your bright baby blues) or addressing the beginning of the Me generation after the disillusionment of VietNam and Watergate (The Pretender) this album was absolutely his reaction to the times. This was not the popular time for the singer songwriter. Some of these guys, like J.D. Souther and Jackson Browne were happy to live off of the pennies they got when The Eagles (and others) recorded their songs. While harder to appreciate after the 70's were over, there is some beautiful stuff to appreciate here and it is worth it.
