The whole sound of this album is dark, lost, and maddening even. The slow changes that Phillip Glass makes in the pieces keep the sharp mind on edge for the next change while ever fearing the awkward sounds. If I could put this sound to anything it would be falling down a dark ever changing pit. Hints the name, A Descent into the Maelstrom. To truly like this album, one must truly understand Glass, and that is no easy task. Still the sound of Glass can be good, but still times can be mind numbing. I suggest getting to know Glass before you make any hasty assumptions.

These songs are great when you listen to one or two of them...The only thing I have to admit, is that they all sound the same. He uses the same synths, similar beats, and the same note patters in all of these songs. Although his style is unique, none of these songs are when compared in juxtaposition.
    • My introduction to Glass.

My exploration of classical music led me to listen to Glass, and I chose this album at a whim specifically because of the cool title. The music is inspired by E.A. Poe's short story of the same name. This music is highly hynotic, repetitive, and moody and never seems to go anywhere. It is a highly atmospheric mix of synthesizers, strings, woodwinds, and soprano vocals. You can probably tell whether you will like this album or not by listening to the samples, but I must admit that I liked it when I downloaded it but have listened to the album about four times in two days and now absolutely love it. This is an amazing work of art.
