And John Williams, Leopold Stokowski and Janes Levine cannot hold a candle to LB in this (and most other genres).

Outside of John Williams, Leopold Stokowski and James Levine, the United States can claim Leonard Bernstein as one of, if not the most highly acclaimed conductor in American music. In many respects, this album is a culmination of what American values once were; George Gershwine was a true genius, one of the greatest composers and song writers ever born out of Tin Pan Alley, and this arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue is one of the most beloved interpretations of it. An American in Paris itself is a truly amazing piece which only has deeper meaning when listeners watch the film it became. The Symphonic Dances from West Side Story are truly spectacular; West Side Story itself is, in a way, an American Opera (aside from Porgy and Bess, which Gerswhin also wrote), and these dances help to encapsulate the love, tension and heartache of the film. Lastly, the pieces from On the Waterfront help fans of the film remember what the film was about, mainly a man standing up for what he felt was right, doing something about it and thus making a difference in his community. The film itself captures what the American attitude once was. In short, this is an album that is an audio masterpiece, and should be purchased by fans of either Gershwin, West Side Story or fans of fine classical music.

This was my first "Classical" album when I was younger. The combination of Bernstein and Gershwin is without match! I love it today as much as I loved it back in 1959. Some music is forever - this fits into that category.
