    • ELO FAN FOREVER

Seriously, I think ELO is better than the Beatles. What they did with what they had was masterful. I bought the LPs back in the 70s, I bought the Best Of CDs, and now I’m reconstructing my original collection in digital. Jeff Lynne’s ELO is timeless.

The first album I ever bought, and one I return back to time and time again. When Out of the Blue is good, it's very, very good (It's Over, Turn to Stone, Twilight, and the quite extraordinary run from Believe me Now, Steppin' Out, and the magnificent Concerto for a Rainy Day suite). But when Out of the Blue is bad, it's horrid (Jungle is an embarrassment, and both Across the Border and Wild West Hero trade in the kind of tired imagery and stereotyping that would make a modern audience cringe.) Patchy and bloated as a double LP. It would have been a spectacular single LP with the dross cut out.

Got this LP for my 16th birthday and started a love of a great group. Truly sad the US only plays the "hits" and not the rest of the LP. Birmingham Blues and Across the Border are to me the best tracks on the album after the Concerto for a rainy day. (Not just Mr Blue Sky)

I can remember when this album came out like it was yesterday. Considering the much ballyhooed leadups to this album, a double album release was, well, considered by many an expansive reach. But Out of the Blue delivered. I remember putting the needle down that first night of the release. It blew me away. Many of my favorite songs from this album are not the "hits". I guess I was not alone. I had a group of friends that like, me, connected to "Wild West Hero". We stand, arm in arm, at the top of our lungs singing along, to somewhat an Irish lore backdrop. When I hear it now, I think of those days, and ELO there leading us along in our life journey. In many regards, this album leads me on still.

I had already been familiar with hits such as "Mr. Blue Sky", "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "It's Over", but now I'm adding "Starlight" to the roster of favorites. I think I'm going to have that dreamy song stuck in my head for a long time. I can just see this song being in the next "Guardians of the Galaxy" installment.
