Sly & The Family Stone like their Greatest Hits should at least be remastered to really help it to enhance the vocals and instruments on various tracks on the lp that the listener can choose to enjoy.
It,s definitely a 5 ***** classic to include in your music library.

Sly & Family Stone's greatest achievement.
Seems like Sly found out the promises of the 60's love 'n' hope were false.
And it took till 1971 to come out with this gem (or hangover) from that era.
This is DEEP funk. Can't go any lower than this. This album never gets old.
The gritty and muddy sound is created because Sly kept erasing and overdubbing parts.
And it affected parts that weren't overdubbed. And surprisingly, that a good thing.
Five stars aren't enough for this album. Pick this up at once.
This album is not to be missed. 'nuff said........

I'm an R&B musician. I was 18 years old, standing in a saloon in a sleepy southern town where i was playing when Sly's "Dance to the Music" single hit the airwaves. It was one of those moments when I learned for myself how something can arrive that stands apart from the universe as "I" knew it. Standing there gripping the juke-box a long moment after the song finished, stunned, all I could think was ".. who are these people?!" The sound was a call.. to action, somehow. I didn't know what, but I knew something important had started somewhere "out there" in the world. And I wanted in. I've had a thrilling life you might not believe, that I trace back to that moment. Wow.

They seem to have re-released one of the most unbelievable records ever, and there are 6 reviews?!!? This record is awe inspiring, and everyone must own it, they even have the real record jacket art restored. It's a great day!

The true greatness of this record is measured by how a) addictive it is and b) how hard it is to get into. Listen to his use of primitive drum machines. Listen to the SPACES between the instruments. Listen to the arrangements. While my personal favorite Sly album is FRESH, this one belongs on another planet. I've seen rabid R n B fans listen to it and walk away scratching their heads. One of the most difficult albums in the world to love; one of the best ever recorded. Saw him live 3 times (twice during the FRESH tour, once recently). I touched him!!!

Sly Stone is a genius - there's a reason why Miles Davis was completely floored by Sly and his new music. The music here is among the most innovative and essential of all 20th century American music, of any genre. It retains all of the vitality and electricity of the Family Stone's 60s music, but adds a very dark undercurrent of decadence and decay. On this record, a perfect balance between these two extremes is maintained, before Sly started to fall off of the brink. You'll have to listen to the whole record more than once to "get it", but once you do, you'll fall under the music's spell too.
