Wow. Beautiful, with tiny gems of atonality/dissonance sparkling in the tracks make this album a rare find. Punch Brothers play with such intuition and heart, I can't not sigh with contentment when listening to any of their music. Bluegrass fan or not, this album is a treat.
    • Phenomenal. And, in a nutshell...

The Blind Leaving The Blind: 42 minutes of finely orchestrated notes and words that makes you feel like you lost something very important, but that it might be ok, because everyone else probably did too.

The Punch Brothers live is like crawling inside of a Monet or Rembrandt painting.

Ehhh... is what comes to mind when listening to this record. With such a formidable group of musicians lead by the virtuosic Chris Thile, I would have hoped to connect with the music and the players through music and songwriting. It's very bourgeois in its playing and delivery and doesn't make a connection to those who support the music. Huge disappointment.

It isn't for everyone, but if you like bluegrass presented in the context of a symphony, this is a great buy!
    • Call it avant-garde folk/blue grass? Why not

First of all, I have to say there is a reason the Punch Brothers are on the same label as amazing bands such as Wilco, it is because they write amazing music. Chris Thile is a musical genius, and his band mates' mastery of their instruments is unquestionable. The music is so moving, I feel like I am going through a divorce right along Thile when I listen to the Blind Leaving The Blind. I first heard of the Punch Brothers a few years ago - a teacher I had in high school is the brother of one of the members and I have been a huge fan ever since.

After hearing the group on Prairy Home Companion and sampeling the songs I ordered the album. It was a mistake and if I could return the album for a refund, I would. The songs are self indulgant and musicianship sophomoric. The intricate playing I expected is no where to be found unless you count fast runs up and down the minor scale but nothing is blended in to a cohesive song you want to care about. I have never written a review or complained about a purchas but this was a huge mistake. I was hopeing for more. Don't buy this album!
