This is an awesome album. I bought the vinyl, then the tape, and then the cd. Need I say more? Ok, how about Jeff Beck and Cozy Powell? C’mon, still not enough? Okay, all the musicians are strong, Max Middleton’s creative keyboarding stands strong along side Beck’s guitar-god excellence. Cozy keeps it rocking, Bob Tench brings a soulful vocal, and bass player Clive Chaman’s tasteful bass is always interesting. Man, it’s just a cool band and album. There’s only two studio albums with this line-up, before wanderlust Beck moved onto the next level of genius guitar playing. I recommend both Jeff Beck Group albums, highly.

Ice Cream Cakes!

It's a pretty good album in general, but Ice Cream Cakes has some of the crunchiest grooves in the history of rock. It's the one track from this album that is permanently resident on whatever my current generation of portable music device is. Rock on!
One of My Favorites

I remember buying this album on vinyl when it was released in 1972, ( I'm giving away my age now ). I love the R&B flavor of these early recordings. Jeff's guitar work is fascinating if you listen closely. My biggest question is why hasn't iTunes acquired Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow"?

A best friend turned me on to this album soon after it was released. I am a huge Beck fan and this album for me was Jeff's coming out as an amazing all around guitarist. This album has it all; smoking hot riffs, soaring instumentals, fun songs like sugar cane and an excellent Dylan cover. It also displayed Jeff's knack for picking talented band mates. Bob Tench's voice is the essence of gritty rock and Max Middleton is the best piano man in the business ! If you don't own this album you're not worthy to be called a Beck fan.

Bought the album on its release date. It has been and continues to be one of my favorite albums ever by anyone. Nine awesome tunes, and I cannot listen to Sugar Cane and Going Down enough. Never enough. BTW, there's a great essay on Beck & Clapton in the 3/4/10 issue of Rolling Stone (Issue #10900). Tried to find the article online, but RS doesn't provide it. The article's great.

A best friend Rem loaned me a vinyl copy days after it's release and I liked each cut very much. Got me a copy in CD but recently lost claim from Ms. Ex!
But now my e-copy will be my eternal copy and for my ex it is Definitely Maybe...
Essential Beck

This albumn represents an essential piece of Beck. There's more to this disc then great rockin' tunes. It shows a complete musican not just a soloist. Not only does this disc, like his others, showcase his solos with his unique phrasing, style and sound, (check out Ice Cream Cakes and Going Down), but this disc like no other features Beck relying heavily on chord work to define songs. Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, I Gotta Have a Song and Highways all show Beck's chord work at its best. It is an important middle part of the Beck road map showing us how he got from where he started to where he is now.
An acquired taste, but one to be savored

"Going Down" (track 6) has always been one of my favorite rock anthems. It ROCKS big time and Beck's guitar rolics all over the place. Definitely one for the headphones and some serious air guitar. "Ice Cream Cakes" also had a nasty guitar grove and some nice keyboards. Overall one of Beck's best rock efforts.
