"It Seemed a Better Way" digs deep into the heart. It seemed to me a tragic tale of the lament of a pacifist who failed to act to protect a loved one. I interpreted the song as if an individual embraced the message of non-violence, which seemed a better way until violence struck as he stood by. The poetry is on par with Tom Waits' "Back in the Crowd" or Richard Hawley's "Don't Get Hung up in Your Soul."

I loved Mr Cohen so felt this would be his last album familiar with his lyrics. I bought it through iTunes, thinking it would stay mine, although I don’t have Family sharing. On my phone for me. Now it is gone? No more iTunes purchases from me. I’ll find this elsewhere and buy again on a hard CD. Just a heads up with all respect to the late Mr. Cohen. I got it darker from iTunes bc it’s no longer in my Music. :(

Interesting, but not my thing

I had heard of him but always thought he was only a songwriter/composer. This last Christmas I caught a conversation about Hallelujah (I love Cloverton's version) and people were just raving about Cohen and everyone else ruined his song. Well, imo everyone else made it better. I've listened to different years of his music and different songs just to make sure I was being fair (imo) because I have a very wide and ecclectic collection of music. But, no. Have no idea what people see in him. He doesn't even sing? Must be a hippie or bohemian thing. each to their own and if you enjoy it, then carry on. Music is very subjective so I'm not saying it's bad. I just don't really like it. Peace.

I have been awed by Mr Cohen's works since hearing Famous Blue Raincoat in a amateur sing night in Banff in 1973. His poetry and compassion have never wavered. And this body of work, released in the proximity of his death, couldn't be a better ending, for us. I will miss you, but your songs and poetry are in the marrow of my life, and have been passed down to my children. One hundred years from now, artists will still be covering Hallelujah, Suzanne, and Bird on a Wire.
