This is THE classic progressive statement from one of the finest American bands of all time. There was nothing like this on this side of the Atlantic when it arrived. They followed up with several more fine albums such as Song For America, Leftoverture and Point Of Know Return but the group's musical genius started with its first release............ KANSAS!

of me is that I would never like prog rock, Prog Metal, maybe, but never this stuff. What people don't understand is that I will listen to anything innovative that sounds good. I mean seriously who was the first guy from this band who said, "Hey I know, we'll craft a Zeppeliny, Doors-esque sound and throw in some Violins!". Whichever member of the band was the first to think this up is a genious, and you sir, I respect highly. Kansas is a band that went thtrough a bad period during the 80's but, that doesn't change the fact that they were geniouses, the epic sound they can create with a violin, it just amazes me, it's like when black metal decides to throw in synths, it's so out of place, but you don't care, it sounds way to good. I can say as a fan of everything from the doors to cannibal corpse to motley crue to burzum Rimsky Korsakov, Ludwig van Beethoven and the sex pistols, this is good music, trust me, I've been around the rock and metal music world and seen a little bit of everything...

Anyone could tell you Kansas wrote the famous songs like "Carry On Wayward Son," "Dust in the Wind," and "Point of Know Return," but a true Kansas fan would've listened to this album long ago. I actually just recently got interested in them; after seeing them live only a few weeks ago, I realized they were a neat band. "Can I Tell You" was the perfect hook; the violin in it drew me in so quickly I couldn't stop listening. Next is "Bringing It Back," a nice diddy with some excellent violin solos, and then it's the sweet ballad that is "Lonely Wind." "Belexes" is probably my favorite song from this album, just due to its sheer power and gusto. "Journey from Mariabronn" and "Apercu" are great songs with nice keyboard riffs, and "The Pilgrimage" is another great diddy, upbeat and steady. The final song, "Death of Mother Nature Suite," was the perfect conclusion; sorrowful in nature, and yet strong and rockin'. If you're looking for a rock style that not only utilizes a progressive style, but also incorporates a violin, I highly recommend this album; you won't be disappointed.

This was absolutely my favorite album as a high school senior, driving my 1970 slant/6 Duster around with a 15" woofer from an amplipher in the back seat! Over and over, this was always one of our favorite cruise tunes! With the 'under the dash mounted cassette player' rigged to the radio, we used to crank it too the max, windows down, screaming the words to Belexes at the top of our lungs, 'Look at the heads buried deep....'. My wife still cringes when I put this song on! Kansas was one of my all time favorite bands.

This was my first introduction to Kansas back in the 70's and it blew me away. Back then i though side one of the album was the finest A Side i had ever heard, "Can I Tell You" and "Bringing It Back " get you rocking "Lonely Wind" mellows you out "Belexes" and "Journey From Mariabronn" shoots you into outer space. That was my opinion 30 plus years ago and still is today. I you're a lover of any music this is a must have. As far as Kansas CD's goes. this one is the heavyweight champ.

...purchased when I was in Junior High School. I played it constantly and even bought an 8-track tape for my brother's car so we could listen on the way to and from school. I see no need to purchase the "live" version of Bringing It Back - the studio version is superb. This album, Song For America, and Masque are far and away the best and most interesting of the groups offerings. Seems like as the commercial success hit with their later albums, they seemed to lose the soul of the first three albums.
